Sedbergh Wins at 2023 World Schools Netball Cup

The World Schools Netball Cup is an opportunity for talented netball players from all over the UK as well as Dubai and Kenya to compete for the crown of World Schools Netball Cup Champions. Sedbergh School sent our U17 and U15 teams, twenty players, to Loughborough University’s world class facilities for the event. The competition at this event is exceptionally strong.

“Our players had a brilliant experience playing against teams from all over the world; making new friends with their ‘opposition’; displaying huge spirit as well as excellent sportsmanship even under great pressure. It was a building experience that we will see the girls reap the benefits of from September.

The WSG is growing every year as more and more of the best schools, in England in particular, join the competition. Competition was very, very tough and 5/7 wins for the U15 and 4/6 wins and Plate Champions for the U17 was therefore very pleasing.”

Close up of the U17 path to winning the plate

After an opening night win vs Strathallan, the U17 VII were disappointed to finish third in their tough group, with two wins and two losses. However they were then absolutely determined to go home with the Plate – losing was just not an option. The semi-final saw a very competitive match with Balerno High – Sedbergh were two goals ahead for the majority of the match but just could not shake off Balerno completely. We were relieved to finish with a 12-9 win. Into the final we went against Scarisbrook Hall. Scarisbrook really tested us, however defensively Sedbergh just would not let them score; we struggled in our attack end to start however eventually we found our groove. 8-8 at full-time saw the game go to extra-time. Sedbergh were absolutely ruthless from this point on, winning the 5 mins 3-1 to take victory.

“The U17 VII were a new team and it was an opportunity to see what next year will look like for these players. They got better and better with every match, proving that Senior netball at Sedbergh is in very safe hands.”

Close up of the U15 path to a 6th place finish

The U15 VII were in ruthless form from minute one, winning all of their five group matches to top their group. Into the Cup they went and were competing for a finish in the Top Eight. Their first match to advance into the semi-finals, and therefore Top Four, was against GSAL. GSAL had caused an upset the previous day by gaining a draw against favourites Dubai College. Sedbergh unfortunately came up short against GSAL on the scoreboard however they played outstandingly well and definitely won the ‘sportsmanship’ element of this match which is very important to us.

“The U15 VII rounded off a magnificent season with their Top Six finish in the Cup. They performed brilliantly under pressure, as they have done all season.”
