We are
humble.

Stay true, be you, be great
At Sedbergh, we march to the beat of a different drum. Our pride lies not just in our ancient lineage, and our illustrious origins, but in our strength of community and resilience of character. We believe greatness isn’t achieved by loud boastful claims, but by having the courage to be authentic, and the commitment to be responsible members of society.
We’ve built a community where each individual is valued for their unique strengths. With their feet on the ground, our pupils embody the essence of humility, understanding that a community flourishes when empathy takes centre stage, not ego.
Humility
Humility is characterised by having a modest and unpretentious view of yourself – including an awareness of your limitations and imperfections and a willingness to learn from others. Humility is not about criticising yourself, self-deprecation or lack of self-confidence – common misconceptions; it’s about having a balanced view of yourself (your strengths and weaknesses) and treating others with respect and kindness. Humble individuals tend to be open-minded, receptive to feedback, and willing to put the needs and interests of others before their own. Cultivating humility requires self-awareness and introspection.
“To me, humility is about knowing that there is no such thing as perfection and that you should always be trying to improve. I always say – never take yourself too seriously.”
Paul Lucas, Head of Psychology and Deputy Head of Sixth Form
