Pre A-Level Programme

A one-year programme of study for international pupils, that is designed to support their transition into the British education system, while acting as a supportive pathway to the next stage of their studies. Pupils will have the opportunity to sit up to five GCSE subjects.

The Pre A-level Foundation programme is designed to support pupils whose level of English language may be a barrier to accessing the advanced content material in a Sixth form. The programme is designed to ensure that pupils have the language and skills required for accessing curriculum material and content for the next stage in their academic pathway.

Pupils will be able to access a combination of lessons that are designed to offer both small and large group support, providing the opportunity to engage with targeted English language support where required, alongside opportunities to fully integrate and engage with curriculum material and extra-curricular opportunities alongside their peers.

Sedbergh provides a truly authentic British boarding experience for its pupils, with only 15% of international pupils and 98% of pupils are full boarders.

A tailored programme for international pupils

Pupils joining the Pre A-level course will be taught English in small groups, supported by our highly experienced EAL teachers. In addition, pupils will receive Maths and science support, delivered through both small group sessions within the EAL department, alongside whole, taught-class sessions with the rest of the year group. This will ensure that each pupil has the appropriate level of support to their needs while providing plenty of opportunities to engage with other pupils and the wider school setting.

During the one year course, pupils will have the opportunity to sit up to five GCSE subjects, made up of Maths, Physics, iGCSE EAL, their first language plus one other from a selected group of subjects.  This will be dependent on ability and will be assessed by the school.

All pupils will be part of a tutor group with their peers and will be able to access the full range of social activities on offer at Sedbergh School.
