Academics

At Sedbergh School, we take pride in offering a well-rounded, challenging, and supportive academic programme that inspires a lifelong love of learning. With small class sizes and expert teaching, every pupil benefits from personalised attention that nurtures their unique talents and aspirations.

Beginning in Year 9 with our innovative 9 Inspire curriculum, pupils develop essential future skills such as critical thinking, leadership, and collaboration. These skills not only prepare pupils for life but also provide a strong foundation for their GCSE studies.

Following GCSEs, pupils progress to Sixth Form, where they pursue A-Levels or BTECs. We are committed to supporting every pupil to excel in their chosen post-school pathway, whether that leads to university, degree apprenticeships, or entering the world of work.

Our curriculum is broad and flexible, catering to a wide range of interests and abilities, while fostering intellectual curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Pupils are encouraged to strive for excellence, not only in achieving their academic goals but also in developing resilience, independence, and a growth mindset.

Beyond the classroom, Sedbergh offers a wealth of opportunities to explore new ideas, engage in stimulating discussions, and pursue passions. This dynamic academic foundation equips pupils with the skills and confidence to excel in their next steps, whether in further education or the wider world.

Academic results

The majority of Sedberghians apply for university, however we acknowledge that for some it is not their preference. Pupils are encouraged to stretch themselves academically and by achieving their best whilst at Sedbergh they leave the door open to returning to Further Education at a later stage.

The breadth and depth of courses and destinations that the pupils are now moving on to study is testament to their hard work and dedication combined with the commitment and support demonstrated by the staff team.

Sixth form (year 12 and 13) at Sedbergh School

Sixth Form pupils initially select four subjects and, if they wish, may choose to continue with three subjects after the October mid-term break. At this point, in line with our commitment to equipping pupils with valuable future skills, we strongly encourage all pupils to undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Equivalent to half an A-Level, the EPQ enables pupils to research and write about a topic of their own choice, fostering independent learning and critical thinking.
