Evans House was originally the residence of the Headmaster in 1784. The House emblem and colour—a yellow wasp—have remained unchanged since it became a boarding house in 1878.

Chris Swainson has been Housemaster of Evans House since September 2021. He first joined Sedbergh in 2013 after graduating from Durham University with a degree in Natural Sciences. Chris served as a resident tutor in Powell House, later becoming Deputy Housemaster and Head of Year 10.
After a brief tenure at Epsom College, where he led Sixth Form Physics extension and Oxbridge preparation, Chris returned to Sedbergh, combining his passion for teaching with coaching Bigside rugby and junior girls’ cricket. He also contributes musically, playing in ensembles and productions.
Chris and his wife Eleanor, a Durham graduate and solicitor, returned to Sedbergh in 2021 with their two children, Theadora and Hugo. Some of Chris’s Sedbergh highlights include Les Misérables, rugby tours, Wilson Run days, and Westmorland League cricket.
