Rupert has been Housemaster of Cressbrook from September 2024 and alongside Miss Bennett, they are a fomidable House team! Rupert lives in House with his wife, Ellie, who teaches Business at Sedbergh School, and their young daughter, Harriet who attends The Mulberry Bush Nursery.

Rupert attended Chafyn Grove Prep School and King’s Bruton in Somerset, where he full boarded from the age of 7, as his parents were posted overseas with the armed forces. He went onto Cardiff Metropolitan University before completing his teacher training through Buckingham University. Ru joined Sedbergh in 2018 as Director of Sport. You could say boarding runs in the family as his parents have both led Boarding Houses in the south west after leaving the military.

Nick is the Senior Deputy Head at the Prep School, overseeing the boarding teams across both Houses. Nick’s wife, Emma, works in marketing for the School and they have a daughter in Year 9 and a son in Year 6.

HOUSE PROFILE

Rupert believes that the most important part of the boarding experience is to make sure everyone in the House feels safe and included, a place where we can create a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere that the boys can call their ‘home away from home’. He is ably assisted in this by Miss Bennet, Assistant Housemistress and several Tutors (academic teachers). All in Cressbrook are responsible for making it an inclusive and happy place.

Cressbrook’s principles, as well as mirroring the School’s values, are kindness, tolerance, fairness, consideration for all others; we want all members of Cresbrook to be brave, to open themselves up to new experiences and to never fear failure.  To that end, all Cressbrookians are encouraged to get involved in the wide variety of opportunities that Sedbergh Prep offers.

It is taken as read that all Cressbrookians will be ambitious and try their best in the classroom and in our busy extra-curricular programme. What matters here is effort rather than just attainment – and effort and endeavour are rewarded in Cressbrook.

“There are too many things to list which (our son) loves about Sedbergh Prep, but at the heart of his dedication is his boarding house, Cressbrook. The boys are allowed (and indeed encouraged) to grow in to their skin, take responsibility for their own actions and futures, and to have fun.” Parent/Carer

“Sending (our son) to Cressbrook might well rank as the best decision we’ve ever taken in (his) best interest. It has unquestionably developed him as a young man.” Parent/Carer

HOUSE HISTORY

In 1913 Cressbrook School was established by Mr Felix Dowsen in nearby Kirkby Lonsdale. A description given in Bulmer’s Directory would also be apt for our current site, ‘another good mansion standing on an eminence in its own grounds, from which delightful views of the Lune Valley and Yorkshire Hills are obtained’.
