Discover Boarding

Boarding lies at the heart of our school, building a unique sense of community and enhancing much of what makes Casterton, Sedbergh Prep an outstanding place to learn. The boarding houses play a key role in developing the school’s strong sense of family values, encouraging our children to harmoniously live and work together, build friendships and develop their independence. The boarding community is diverse, with a healthy mix of different nationalities, personalities and boys and girls.

Outside of the School day, our boarders’ time is productive, with supervised homework and a wide range of activities offered every evening, for all interests, from art to Zumba and much in between. To exercise boarders’ minds, a series of house lectures are run each year. Recently we have enjoyed talks by Alastair Hignell (Rugby International, Cricketer and former BBC Rugby commentator); Mike Hurst (‘The Springfields’ and Music Producer) and Anne Fine (former Children’s Laureate and award winning novelist) to name but a few.

BOARDING ETHOS

Boarding at Sedbergh Preparatory School is based on the principle that the House should act as an extension of the child’s family. The Houses have a warm and welcoming atmosphere which provides a happy and structured environment for boarders. The behaviour of both children and staff is based upon kindness, tolerance and respect.

Houseparents and staff are on hand around the clock, providing a happy home-like environment for our boarders – Beale House for the girls and Cressbrook House for the boys. Both our Houseparents have their own families and this helps to contribute to the nurturing feel of our boarding community.

Our children genuinely flourish in our beautiful surroundings and they are offered the attention, care and guidance that will allow them to develop as young people. It is no coincidence that our House boards boast the names of numerous scholars and internationally recognised sportsmen and musicians.

We recognise every child is different and some will be ready for boarding at different times in their lives, starting from Year 3, while some will choose to remain as a day pupil throughout their time at the Prep School. In this regard, we offer a range of different boarding options in both the girls’ and boys’ houses, including full, weekly, tri (where children stay three nights a week) and flexi boarding (where children can stay on a flexible basis).

You can find out more about the boarders’ daily routine including information on family dining and communication with home on the page ‘A Typical Day.

Each morning, before school, boarders (and day pupils) can take part in early morning sports clubs including running, netball, swimming, football and cricket . Those who play musical instruments also have supervised practice time scheduled each week. Our weekend adventures are a popular part of the week and are open to all pupils to attend if boarding the night before.
