Exploring the Financial World: Will’s Summer Work Experience

In this interview, Will, a Year 13 student, shares his experiences from an exciting summer of work placements in the financial sector. From working at BlackRock to Munich Re and Redburn Atlantic, he reflects on what he learned about the competitive world of finance and how it has shaped his future career ambitions. Will also discusses how his sports background and leadership skills have helped him thrive in high-pressure environments, offering valuable advice to other students seeking similar opportunities.

What did you do over the summer? What company did you work with, and how long was it?

Over the summer, I did work experience in the financial sector, spending time at BlackRock, Munich Re, and Redburn Atlantic.

At BlackRock, I worked with their bond team, gaining insights from analysts, traders, and portfolio managers. At Redburn Atlantic, I followed a similar structure, but with a different perspective. Munich Re was unique, as I explored the insurance side, specifically the Lloyd’s of London market, which was fascinating.

These opportunities were really insightful and deepened my interest in pursuing a career in finance. It also motivated me to work harder in my studies, especially considering how competitive these placements are.

Have you mentioned these experiences in your personal statement?

Yes, I dedicated a substantial part of my personal statement to my work experience. It really helped me demonstrate my passion for the industry and also applied well to my studies, particularly in economics and geography.

What A-Levels are you taking?

I’m studying Economics, Geography, and Classical Civilisation.

I’ve applied for Land Economy at Cambridge, Business and Finance at Edinburgh, Management at St. Andrews, International Business at Edinburgh, and Finance at Durham.

How important is it to be proactive in finding opportunities?

It’s crucial. You never know who you might talk to that could lead to an opportunity. For one of my placements, I got the chance through a conversation with a friend’s parent, and a few weeks later, I was in the office. You need to actively seek out and make the most of those chances; they won’t just be handed to you.

Has this work experience influenced your future plans?

Definitely. It’s helped narrow my focus and allowed me to explore which niche within the industry I’d like to pursue.

What do you think made you successful in getting these highly competitive positions?

Being proactive and professional in my communication was key. You need to show appreciation for the time they give you and work hard once you’re there. Building strong connections can lead to future opportunities, like internships.

What was your biggest takeaway from the experience?

The competitive nature of the financial services industry. It reminded me of my sports background, where it’s all about winning or losing, but you still need teamwork and diverse thinking to succeed.

You mentioned a sports background—what does that involve?

I play first-team hockey and second-team rugby. That competitive mindset really helped me thrive in the high-pressure finance environment, where performance is everything.

What other extracurricular skills have been useful in your work experience?

Leadership and communication skills were invaluable, particularly during meetings at BlackRock, where conveying ideas clearly was essential. Also, being driven and able to handle setbacks is critical in both sports and finance.

What advice would you give to other pupils seeking work experience?

I’d suggest being proactive. Use the people you know, as you never know who might offer you an opportunity. If you don’t know anyone in the field, take the initiative to reach out via platforms like LinkedIn or through online research.

I don’t use LinkedIn very frequently yet, but I find it useful for staying connected post-work experience. I plan to use it more in the future, especially as I pursue internships and spring weeks during university.
