The Sedbergh Prep International English Enrichment Programme offers a unique opportunity developed specifically for pupils in Year 7 (aged 11 and 12) with reduced English proficiency (minimum Level A1 CEFR). On this 1-year+ programme, children will not only develop their English skills but also engage fully in school life, participating in sports, arts and our broad extra-curricular programme. Sedbergh Prep provides a truly authentic British boarding experience for its pupils, with just 8% of the pupil body coming from overseas.

This programme opens the door for international children who previously might not have been considered for enrolment due to English language ability. Through a combination of small group lessons, immersive learning with native-speaking peers and specialist English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, pupils receive an individually tailored education across 12 months, with the option to stay at Sedbergh for longer if they wish.

Unlocking Potential, Embracing Opportunities

Pupils are taught in small groups (maximum of 10) by specialist teachers in subjects including Maths, Science, EAL (English as an Additional Language) and Design & Technology.

For Art and Humanities (geography, history and religious studies), the children join mainstream classes, integrating with the broader pupil body. It is essential for children at this age to continue developing their first language, and appropriate support is provided.

Pupils are fully immersed in the school’s community, participating in games and performing arts alongside their peers. They reside in boarding houses and engage in a variety of evening and weekend activities within a safe and nurturing environment.
