Robertson House: brief history

Robertson Girls’ Boarding House at Sedbergh School, known as the “Butterflies,” has a rich history and vibrant community spirit. The House, distinguished by its turquoise colours, was originally built as the school Sanitorium, with its foundations laid in 1884. Positioned in an idyllic setting with fantastic views of Winder and Frostrow, Robertson has evolved into a nurturing environment where students thrive academically, socially, and athletically.

The location of Robertson is superb, close to the main school but tucked away in a lovely spot not too far from the Chapel. The House has lovely social spaces and in-house catering for all meals means we all see each other frequently every day. We have a lovely garden that surrounds the House and our own netball court/tennis court that the girls can use in free time.

Under the guidance of Housemistress Julie Gresswell, who joined in September 2024, Robertson continues to be a home where girls embody the school’s core values of HARK—Humility, Ambition, Respect, and Kindness. Strong house families, led by dedicated prefect teams, foster a sense of belonging and togetherness. Being a Robertson girl is about caring for others, being respectful and dedication to being the best version of themselves. We encourage the girls to give their all in House events and activities, with House spirit always shining through and make the best use of all opportunities and facilities on offer.

The house boasts a roster of distinguished alumni, including International Sportswomen England Rugby Red Rose Abby Ward and England Roses Netball Player Ella Bowen. More recently the House was delighted to welcome back Annabel Roue, who has recently signed a professional contract with the Sale Sharks Women’s Rugby team. The House took great pride in supporting Imogen Boddy, British Ultra Marathon Runner and Athlete, on her quest to become the fastest female to complete the UK National Three Peaks Challenge, setting a Guiness World Record along the way. Imogen is also the creator of the ‘Boddy Challenge’ which pupils can complete in the Sixth Form as a test of resilience and fortitude. These accomplished women reflect the qualities of determination, ambition, and teamwork that Robertson instils in all its members. The Butterflies continue to take pride in their heritage, while striving to reach new heights, inspired by the stunning landscape and the values that define them.

Imogen Boddy – Athlete British ultra marathon runner and Guiness World Record holder for the fastest female time to complete UK National Three Peaks Challenge. Creator of the ‘Boddy Challenge’.

Housemistress and Family

Julie joined Robertson House in September 2024, having previously been Head of Science and Physics at Red House School, Teesside.  Prior to this role, Julie and her husband, Nick, jointly ran a successful boys’ Boarding House at King’s College, Taunton.  Also, part of her role as Head of Science and Physics at King’s College, Julie devised and organised an annual three day science festival to bring the joy of scientific discoveries to pupils, parents and visitors to the College. After graduating from Newcastle University with a BSc (Hons), Julie developed her love for teaching during her PGCE course at Durham University.  Her teaching career also includes leadership roles at Yarm and Caterham Schools.

Although Nick currently works at Red House School, where he is Assistant Head (Operations) and a PE Teacher, he joins Robertson House at weekends. He has a strong background in sport leadership, particularly Rugby.  They have two children, Harry who is currently at university and is an Old Sedberghian (School House) and Darcie, who is in Year 11 at Sedbergh School.

Julie is an experienced Equestrian and has more recently taken up gentle running.  She enjoys the opportunity to take on a new challenge, including abseiling from the Tyne Bridge and completing an endurance swim, both for charity.

Ethos and Visions

Being a member of Robertson House involves being prepared to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Pupils are encouraged to achieve across all spheres of house and school life and find areas where they can excel and enjoy themselves. Participation is held on a par with achievement and a willingness to get involved is of great importance. The values which we hold dear such as kindness and support of each other are the most important aspects of house life.
