Values: Ways of the Wolf

The Prep School’s Ways of the Wolf describe the core values that shape our behaviour: ambition, collaboration, courage, creativity, kindness, and responsibility.

These were defined following discussions across the school community. Pupils were asked what it meant to be ‘Sedberghian’ and they agreed it was about giving everything your best shot, regardless of ability, about being kind and about being part of a family and a community.

We took feedback from these discussions and boiled it down a little more, giving us the essence of what runs through the veins of Sedbergh Prep School. These six Ways of the Wolf are the Sedbergh Prep values that guide everything that we do:

We hope that these Ways of the Wolf resonate with you as much as they do with the pupils and staff at Sedbergh Prep School.

Ambition

We aim high and we understand that hard work brings reward. We employ a growth mindset in all that we do and celebrate excellence in the classroom.

Ambition teaches children that their efforts matter, that they are capable of making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others. By valuing ambition, we aim to create an environment where every pupil is encouraged to dream big, work hard, and to believe in themselves.

“To me, ambition means that when I am trying new things, I need to put in the effort and should not be afraid to fail, because every challenge is a chance to learn and get better!” Year 6 pupil

Collaboration

Not only in our choirs, ensembles, production casts and sports teams; we know that mankind’s greatest achievements have come about through teamwork and we value the ability to work productively with others.

We believe collaboration prepares children for a future where teamwork and adaptability are key to navigating challenges. Embracing collaboration, therefore, not only enhances every child’s educational experience but also lays the foundational skills for success in an interconnected world, making it an indispensable Ways of the Wolf value.

“Collaboration is like a symphony—each pupil playing their unique part, creating a harmony that turns individual notes into a chorus of learning and understanding.”
Mrs Norman, Head of Music

Courage

Sedbergh Prep builds adventurous young men and women with a ‘can do’ attitude. We dig deep when the road gets bumpy, we take risks in our learning and are not afraid of failure.

We want our pupils to have the courage to ask questions, to make mistakes, and to try again; our classrooms are dynamic environments where curiosity thrives and creativity is encouraged. By making courage one of our key values, we aim to support pupils in navigating both their academic and personal development with confidence and integrity.

“Courage is like being a superhero. It means doing the right thing even when it’s scary, like standing up for a friend or trying again when something is really hard.” Year 3 child

Creativity

We understand the need for originality, problem-solving and higher order thinking in the workplace of tomorrow.

Creativity in the classroom is embedded in problem-solving and the ability to think outside the box. By valuing creativity, we aim to offer an environment where every child feels empowered to express their unique perspectives and ideas, building confidence and a sense of individuality. This encouragement of creative thinking from an early age prepares pupils for a future where adaptability, originality and innovation will be key to navigating the complexities of an ever-changing world.

“Creativity is the spark that ignites interest, transforms challenges into opportunities and weaves discovery into every lesson.” Mrs Charlton, Deputy Head (Academic)

Kindness

The most important value, it uderpins all our behaviour in school and lays the foundations for us to make hugely positive contributions to society. We take nothing for granted and do all that we can to help others.

Promoting kindness from an early age encourages empathy, helps children to recognise and respond to the needs of others and enhances peer relationships. This lays the foundation for positive social interactions that extend throughout the School, creating a safe and supportive place conducive to learning and personal growth.

“Kindness is part of our school’s DNA. It is the cornerstone of our day to day life, ensuring every pupil knows they are valued and understood and developing empathetic learners who make positive contributions to our school and wider community.” Nick Goligher, Senior Deputy Head

Responsibility

We revel in the opportunity to be leaders, to look after others and ourselves. We know that leadership is less about the title and more about action. We accept that responsibility for our environment is a priority.

Instilling a sense of responsibility in our Prep School pupils is paramount to their development as conscientious and capable individuals. Responsibility, as a core value, teaches children the importance of accountability for their actions, respect for others and the role they play in their community.

“Responsibility is about driving your own future; you have to do your part, put in effort and care about your work and the people around you. It is how we all help each other grow and make our school a better place.” Year 8 pupil
