Sports at Sedbergh Prep

At the Prep School, we are proud to build strong foundations for Sedbergh’s sporting achievements

Sedbergh is renowned for its top level achievement in a wide variety of sports, with boys and girls featuring prominently in national and international teams. The foundation for this achievement is built at the Prep School.

Our recipe for success is simple. We play sport at least four days a week, and all pupils have top class coaching regardless of their ability, with an emphasis on fun and effort, as well as achievement. Our early morning and break time sports clubs are popular with the children and include running, cricket, swimming, football, triathlon, athletics and netball.

We strive to produce spirited young people with a professional attitude towards personal performance and team responsibility. Competition is taken seriously, and boys and girls participate regularly in local, regional and national competitions and tours. However, we never lose sight of the fun and pleasure that can be found through involvement in sport, and our pupils can always be found cheering on children from their own and visiting schools from the sidelines!

Boys’ Sport

In the Michaelmas Term, the main team sport for boys, from Years 3 to 8, is rugby. Boys in Years 6, 7 and 8 are invited to attend a pre-season training session in the sport prior to the start of the school year. The School’s rugby club is among the strongest in the North and many players from the Prep School have gone on to play at 1st XV, County and International level on their move to the Senior School. We recognise, however, that not all boys are suited to the sport and we therefore provide opportunities for pupils to pursue alternative activities including hockey, swimming, shooting and running.

In the Lent Term, the main boys’ sports are hockey, rugby sevens and cross-country running although there is still the opportunity to participate in shooting, swimming and climbing. The highlight of this term is competing in the world’s largest rugby tournament, the ‘National Schools Sevens’ at Rosslyn Park. In the Summer Term, the boys make the most of the cricket season and we also offer fixtures in swimming, athletics, sailing and tennis.

We aim to give every boy from Years 3 to 8 the opportunity to represent the Prep School in all the main sports, by fielding teams to suit all ability levels. Our dedicated games staff are supported by coaches from the Senior School across many of the disciplines including cricket, hockey, rugby, cross country running, athletics, swimming and shooting.

Girls’ Sport

Netball, hockey and cross country are run consecutively throughout the Michaelmas and Lent terms, whilst cricket, athletics and tennis are the girls’ main sports in the Summer Term. Swimming, shooting, climbing and sailing are also available at various times throughout the year.

Our specialist Prep School games staff coach the school teams but in addition to this the girls are also supported by members of coaching staff from the Senior School. This ensures continuity of instruction across the entire school and input from the highest level.

All girls from Year 3 and up enjoy the opportunity to play representative sport, regardless of ability. There is a full and extensive programme of fixtures in all our major sports. Every Year 6, 7 and 8 girl is invited to join pre-season training and an annual tour to Scotland, both of which develop high levels of collaboration and standards of play and also provide an opportunity for the girls to enjoy being part of the school team, regardless of their level of play.

In recent years our U13 girls’ teams have made the national finals in cross country, hockey, cricket and netball.

Cricket

Sedbergh Prep has for the last two yeaes been included in the Top 50 Prep/Junior Schools in the year’s The Cricketer Schools’ Guide. This is in recognition of the place cricket holds at the school and our extensive programme in place for talented and promising cricketers. Many of our boys and girls have played at District and County level.

This programme is a year-round development initiative that is run alongside the cricket coaching team from Sedbergh School and includes the use of video analysis and our indoor cricket nets throughout the off-season, for both one to one and group cricket sessions. Our popular weekly, lunchtime Junior cricket club serves to introduce some of the younger pupils to this wonderful game! The Prep School also plays host to county and district games, as well as training, throughout the year.
