Service and Charity

As a way of ‘giving back’, service is a way of life at Sedbergh and Mr Dan Harrison, Headmaster, is passionately committed to the part that the School, pupils and staff should play in supporting the local community and those less fortunate. We also recognise that helping others boosts pupil’s mental health and happiness.

Charity and kindness are a way of life

All Sedbergh School pupils are involved with charitable work. While we have established focal events – such as Sedbergh Gives Back and Challenge Week – we encourage pupils to give back whenever and wherever opportunity arises. Pupils come together from across or within Houses and sports teams to support charities of their choosing; recent charities supported by pupils include Oddballs and Young Minds UK.

In the 2023 May School holidays a group of year 13 pupils from the School’s first rugby team cycled 122km to raise £5000 for the Oddballs Foundation. Knowing that the School would be behind them 100%, the pupils chose this charity themselves and organised the ride and fundraising.

Sedbergh Gives Back

One of the most important days in the Sedberghian calendar; during the final week of term prior to Christmas, our entire school community spends a day giving back to local communities, charities and projects. Each House chooses their own activities – often returning for many years to organisations that have been supported previously. In this way the School builds meaningful, lasting, relationships with groups that can benefit from our help.

Challenge Week

Challenge week is devoted to completing ambitious physical challenges. In 2023 the whole of Year 12 took on the National 3 Peaks Challenge which involved pupils climbing the highest mountains in England (Scafell Pike, 978m), Wales (Snowdon, 1085m) and Scotland (Ben Nevis, 1345m) over 3 days. The challenge involved more than 30 miles walking (equivalent to ascending Winder 11 times) and tested pupils both physically and mentally.

While Challenge Week is devoted to completing ambitious physical challenges, some pupils choose instead to complete community projects. In different groups pupils tackled projects including: filling in potholes, cleaning road signs, tidying bus shelters, repairing public picnic tables and cleaning local footpaths.
